Our Approach

At Ty Clai, we believe in the agency of architecture, craftsmanship and community to create meaningful places. Our goal is straightforward: to produce beautiful, lasting objects and spaces while supporting the regeneration of our local high street.

Team

Ty Clai was developed by Luke Royffe and Emma Flynn, both practising architects and directors of Royffe Flynn. Based in Pembrokeshire and London, their work spans architecture and landscape projects locally and internationally. Their experience in regeneration and design has shaped Ty Clai into a space where architecture, craft, and clay come together.

Pottery

Our pottery studio is at the heart of what we do, creating simple, handmade ceramics inspired by the natural beauty of Pembrokeshire. Each piece is crafted by hand on-site, embracing imperfections, wonkiness and the unique character they bring.

Townhouse

The house has been thoughtfully renovated to preserve and enhance its original character and charm, using locally sourced, natural, and reclaimed materials. Features include lime-rendered walls and reclaimed doors and slate hearths. Every detail, from light fittings to curtain rails, has been carefully chosen or custom-made. The use of natural and crafted materials is our attempt to return to slow and considered ways of making and doing.

The furniture is a curated mix of modern and traditional pieces collected over many years. Ty Clai also showcases a collection of artwork from both traditional and contemporary artists including William Wallis and James Dickson Innes.

Regeneration

The regeneration of Ty Clai is more than just a project for us—it’s a test case for what’s possible in small towns. In 2022, we purchased a derelict property on the high street and have slowly restored it with a vision to create a sustainable business that’s both local and national. By using the shop as a pottery workshop and leveraging its presence on the high street, we aim to build a strong online following while staying rooted in our community.

Our model is one we hope can be replicated elsewhere: creating value through restoration, producing quality handmade products, and engaging with the local community through workshops and events. We’re blending traditional craft with modern design, and everything we do is focused on material and design integrity.

At Ty Clai, we’re building something that lasts, with care and intention in every detail.
