Workshop for four people (£90 pp).
Explore the forms and textures of Welsh vernacular architecture in a design-led ceramics workshop at Ty Clai. Using stoneware clay, participants will learn hand-building and slab-building techniques to create a lantern inspired by Welsh cottages and landscapes.
This workshop provides an introduction to clay processes, guiding participants through shaping, cutting, and joining techniques to craft an architectural form. The session includes exploration of apertures, textures, and surface details, connecting materiality with place.
Structure
Overview: Clay preparation, glazing, and firing
Context: Introduction to Welsh vernacular typologies using local and historical references
Tools & Techniques: Overview of pottery tools and hand-building methods
Design: Planning and sketching building form
Making: Form creation using hand-building and extruding techniques
Finishing: Adding texture, detail, and refining edges and surfaces
Details
4 hour session for 1–4 participants
We run one session per day. The sessions can run from 9-1PM or 2-6PM. Please state your preference AM or PM in the notes at checkout.
Create one Welsh cottage or similar building, bisque fired, glazed and fired again ready for collection in 2–3 weeks.
Includes all materials, tools, and premium stoneware clay and glazes
Evening sessions include a glass of wine; day sessions feature tea and cake, enjoyed in the Ty Clai garden or workshop
Please note:
For slab building workshops all clay will be prepped and dried for ease of working 4 days before the event. If for unforeseen circumstances you need to reschedule, Ty Clai is happy to reschedule the workshop provided a minimum of 5 days notice is given. Bookings are non-refundable.
The prices are fixed, irrespective of the amount of people attending.
